Finding the focus of a rumusan

You read the passage twice, yet your rumusan includes points the question never asked for.

The focus of a rumusan is the type of information the question wants, such as sebab, kesan or langkah. Find that word first and most of the selecting is done.

This lesson belongs to the SPM Bahasa Melayu rumusan section. It comes before selecting content without repetition.

How do I find the focus word?

Read the instruction slowly and circle the word that names the information: sebab, kesan, cara, langkah, cadangan. Then note any limit attached to it, such as “kesan negatif” or “langkah oleh pihak sekolah”.

The limit matters as much as the word. A passage on one topic can hold different kinds of information, and only the kind you circled belongs in your answer.

One passage, three different focuses

Here is an original passage. Read it once, then see how the focus changes the selection.

Question focus Sentences that answer it Sentences left out

The passage never changed. Only the focus word changed, and with it every point you select.

The sentence test

Take each sentence and ask two questions. What role does it play in the passage, and does that role match my focus word?

Consider “Kantin sekolah menjual makanan yang murah dan cepat disediakan.” It describes the canteen, so it is background. It tempts you in a sebab question because “murah” sounds like a reason, but the passage gives the reason for the pupils’ choice in the next sentence.

The mistake that costs marks

A common slip is to keep every sentence with a strong idea. The rumusan for “sebab” then includes “berat badan berlebihan” because it sounds serious.

The repair is to label first and select second. Write S, K, L or B beside each sentence (sebab, kesan, langkah, background) before you choose anything. A point with the wrong label is removed, however interesting it is.

Check yourself

Using the canteen passage, the question is: “Nyatakan kesan pemilihan makanan itu kepada murid.” Which two sentences supply the points, and which sentence is most likely to tempt you wrongly?

Answer

The sentence “Akibatnya, sebilangan murid mengalami berat badan berlebihan dan mudah letih di dalam kelas” supplies two points: berat badan berlebihan and mudah letih.

The tempting sentence is “Murid memilih makanan itu kerana harganya rendah dan rasanya sedap.” It is about sebab, not kesan, so it stays out. The signal word “akibatnya” marks the effect, which is a useful clue to look for.

What to study next

Once the focus is clear, the next skill is choosing the best points and avoiding the same idea twice. Continue with selecting relevant content without repetition, then try the rumusan practice set.

Common questions

What is the focus of a rumusan?

It is the one type of information the question wants from the passage, such as reasons, effects, steps or suggestions. The focus word is usually in the instruction, for example sebab, kesan or langkah. Everything you select must answer that word.

Can a point be correct and still be wrong for the rumusan?

Yes. A sentence can be accurate and important in the passage yet belong to a different focus. If the question asks for kesan, a sentence about punca is a true point in the wrong place.

Should I read the question or the passage first?

Read the question first and mark the focus word. Then read the passage with that word in mind, so your first reading is already a search instead of a general impression.

What if the passage mixes causes and effects?

Label each sentence with its role while you read: sebab, kesan, langkah or background. Only sentences carrying the requested label are candidates, and the rest stay out.

If your rumusan still collects true but unwanted points, one-to-one Bahasa Melayu lessons let a teacher watch how you read the question and correct the habit on your own practice passages.
