Writing about health without medical advice

Your health essay reads like a leaflet, full of facts you are not sure are correct.

A health-themed karangan is marked on language and argument, not on medical accuracy. The safest strong point describes a habit and its everyday effect instead of claiming what a food or drug does to the body.

This lesson is part of SPM Bahasa Melayu theme-based writing. The revision habit is the same one taught in developing original points about education and skills.

Why do health essays go wrong?

Students reach for facts because health feels like a science topic. They write “Gula menyebabkan penyakit kencing manis” or quote a percentage from memory. One wrong figure weakens the whole paragraph.

The fix is to change what kind of evidence you use. Replace a medical claim with a habit, a setting and an effect a reader can observe.

Worked example: from claim to argued point

Take the task “Amalan gaya hidup sihat perlu dipupuk dalam kalangan remaja”.

Risky draft. Makan makanan segera menyebabkan obesiti dan penyakit jantung. Ramai remaja dikatakan mengalami masalah ini. Oleh itu, remaja mesti berhenti makan makanan segera.

This draft has three problems: a vague “many”, a strong medical claim and a command with no reasoning.

Revised paragraph. Amalan memilih makanan di kantin sekolah membentuk tabiat harian murid. Contohnya, sebuah sekolah yang menyediakan buah-buahan dan air kosong di kantin memudahkan murid membuat pilihan yang lebih baik setiap waktu rehat. Kesannya, murid berasa lebih cergas semasa pelajaran Pendidikan Jasmani dan tabiat itu terbawa-bawa sehingga ke rumah.

Reasons for each change: the claim is now about a habit, the contoh is a school setting, and the kesan is something a reader can picture, namely feeling more active in class. No figure and no medical term is needed.

How do I choose safe health examples?

Use this short filter before you write a contoh.

  1. Is it about a routine, a place or a programme, not about a disease?
  2. Could a marker check it by common sense, without a textbook?
  3. Does it avoid telling the reader what to take, avoid or treat?

If the answer to all three is yes, the example is safe. Good categories are sport time at school, enough sleep before exams, awareness talks and choices at the canteen.

Can I still be persuasive?

Yes. Persuasion comes from a clear cause and effect, not from alarming words. A sentence such as “Murid yang tidur awal lebih mudah memberi tumpuan di dalam kelas” is cautious, everyday and effective.

If you want a softer tone, use cautious verbs such as “membantu”, “memudahkan” and “mengurangkan”. Avoid “pasti” and “mesti menyebabkan” unless the task truly calls for a strong statement.

Check yourself

Rewrite this sentence so it carries an argued point without a medical claim: Merokok menyebabkan kanser paru-paru dan membunuh ramai orang setiap tahun. The task is “Kempen kesedaran kesihatan di sekolah”.

Answer

One possible version: Kempen kesedaran di sekolah membantu murid memahami kesan amalan tidak sihat dengan cara yang mudah diingati. Contohnya, pengawas bersama guru kaunseling menganjurkan pameran poster dan perbincangan kelas pada setiap hujung bulan. Kesannya, murid lebih berani bertanya dan lebih berhati-hati dengan pilihan harian mereka.

The revision moves the focus from a disease claim to a school campaign, which the task asks about, and adds a contoh and kesan.

Common questions

Do I need medical facts to write a health karangan?

No. The task tests language and argument, not medical knowledge. Use observable habits and their everyday effects, such as tiredness in class or energy for sports, and avoid statistics or treatment claims you cannot check.

What should I do if I am unsure about a health fact?

Leave it out or soften it with a cautious phrase such as 'mungkin membantu'. A careful general statement with a concrete example scores better than a precise figure that may be wrong.

Can I write about sickness or diet in a personal way?

Use a general voice such as 'seorang murid' or 'sebuah keluarga'. Keep the tone respectful, avoid mocking any group, and link the example to the task instead of telling a private story.

Which points work for school health topics?

Points about routines, school canteen choices, sport time, sleep and rest, and awareness campaigns all work, because each can carry a clear action and result without any medical claim.

If health and lifestyle tasks push you into claims you cannot support, a one-to-one BM teacher can read your draft and help you keep the argument while dropping the shaky facts.
