Theme-based writing: practice

You have read the six theme lessons and want to test your own paragraphs.

These seven original exercises follow the six lessons in this cluster. Write your own answer first, then open the explanation.

If you need a lesson, start from SPM Bahasa Melayu and choose the theme you found hardest.

Exercises

Exercise 1 (education). Decide whether this sentence is generic or original, and say why: Pendidikan penting untuk masa depan murid.

Answer

It is generic. It could appear in any essay on education and names no person, action or setting. Compare it with a version such as “Seorang murid yang mengikuti kelas tambahan Matematik di perpustakaan sekolah dapat menyelesaikan latihan dengan lebih yakin”. See developing original points about education and skills.

Exercise 2 (technology). Rewrite this sentence using the device-user-effect pattern: Internet memberi banyak manfaat.

Answer

Device: sambungan internet. User: murid di kampung. Effect: tidak tertinggal pelajaran. See technology essays with concrete examples.

Exercise 3 (community). Name the role, action and result in this sentence: Ahli jawatankuasa surau mengatur jadual bergilir-gilir supaya setiap keluarga menyumbang juadah berbuka, lalu semua jemaah dapat makan bersama.

Answer

Role: ahli jawatankuasa surau. Action: mengatur jadual bergilir-gilir untuk menyumbang juadah. Result: semua jemaah dapat makan bersama.

The sentence is specific because each part can be pictured. See writing about community and family duties.

Exercise 4 (environment). The sentence “Dengan membuang sampah di tong, seluruh negara akan bersih” exaggerates. Rewrite the kesan at a believable scale.

Answer

The effect now matches the scale of the action. See environmental choices without slogans.

Exercise 5 (health). Remove the absolute claim and keep the argument: Bersukan menjamin semua murid mendapat keputusan cemerlang.

Answer

The absolute claim is removed, and the argument now rests on a habit and an observable effect. See writing about health without medical advice.

Exercise 6 (career). Soften this over-promise and keep the point: Kursus pemasakan menjamin kerja di hotel.

Answer

“Menjamin” becomes “menyokong”, and the limit is admitted in a short clause. See career preparation without guaranteed outcomes.

Exercise 7 (mixed). Write a four-sentence paragraph for the task “Peranan teknologi dalam membantu masyarakat luar bandar”. Use isi, huraian, contoh and kesan, and label each.

Answer

One model: Isi: Teknologi membantu masyarakat luar bandar mendapat perkhidmatan tanpa perlu menempuh perjalanan jauh.

Mark your own paragraph by checking that each label points to a different sentence.

If you got these wrong

Return to the lesson for the theme that tripped you up, using the links beside each answer. If all seven were uneven, revisit the four-part structure in building isi, huraian, contoh and kesan.

Record the patterns you miss with the mistake log and paper-error review tool, then rehearse them with the timed original practice session builder.

Common questions

How should I use these exercises?

Write your own answer on paper first, then open the explanation. Compare by the idea each part needs, not by the exact words, since more than one wording can work. Note whether you missed the contoh, the kesan or the balance.

Are these past-paper questions?

No. Every exercise and answer here is original. Check your school's past papers and the Lembaga Peperiksaan website for the current paper format. These exercises train the paragraph skills behind the format.

Should I memorise the model paragraphs?

No. The exam task will differ, so a memorised paragraph rarely fits. Learn the pattern of claim, how, contoh and kesan, and build a new paragraph for each task.

How long should each answer take?

Give yourself about ten minutes per paragraph at first. Once the pattern is familiar, try five minutes with a timer, using the timed practice session builder to keep yourself honest.

If you can revise the samples but your own karangan paragraphs stay general, a one-to-one BM teacher can read your writing with you and set exercises from your own drafts.
