Environmental choices without slogans

Your environment essay keeps saying we must protect nature, and the marker has read that line before.

An environment karangan improves when each paragraph names one choice, where it happens and what changes. Slogans tell the marker what you feel; choices show what you can argue.

This lesson is part of SPM Bahasa Melayu theme-based writing. It uses the same revision method as developing original points about education and skills.

How do I spot a slogan in my own draft?

A slogan is a sentence with an abstract noun and no actor. Look for words such as “penting”, “mesti” and “kesedaran” doing all the work.

For example, “Kesedaran alam sekitar perlu dipupuk” has no person and no action. Ask “siapa buat apa, di mana?” and you get a point you can develop.

Worked example: from slogan to choice

Take the task “Langkah-langkah memulihara alam sekitar di kawasan perumahan”.

First draft. Alam sekitar sangat penting untuk kehidupan. Kita mesti menjaganya supaya bumi kita selamat. Oleh itu, semua orang perlu sedar.

Revised paragraph.

The reasons for the changes: the isi names a choice (beg kain), the contoh gives a family, a place and an action, and the kesan links the choice to a visible effect (longkang) and a wider effect (jiran meniru). The marker can now check the point against what the task asks.

Which details make an environmental example credible?

Choose details a reader can picture without research.

  1. A place: pasar tani, kantin sekolah, sungai berhampiran, taman permainan.
  2. A small action: membawa bekas sendiri, mengasingkan sampah, menanam pokok di sekolah.
  3. A visible effect: longkang bersih, sungai jernih, kawasan lebih teduh.

Avoid stacking all three into one long sentence. One sentence for each keeps the paragraph easy to read.

The mistake to avoid

The common mistake is to write a very large effect from a very small action, such as “Dengan menanam sebatang pokok, seluruh dunia akan selamat”. The exaggeration is easy to spot. Match the effect to the scale: a school garden cools a school field, not the planet.

Scale of action Believable kesan
A family uses cloth bags Less plastic in the neighbourhood drains
A school class plants trees A shadier, cooler field for sports
A town bans open burning Clearer air during the dry season

Revise this paragraph for the task “Peranan sekolah dalam memupuk cinta akan alam sekitar”.

Sekolah mesti memupuk kesedaran. Murid perlu menjaga alam. Jika begitu, alam akan selamat.

Answer

The revision names an activity, a place and a group, and ends with an effect at the same scale as the action.

Common questions

Why are environment slogans weak in a karangan?

Slogans such as 'Jagalah alam sekitar kita' are true for every environment task, so they add no information. A specific choice, such as bringing a reusable container to a market, gives the marker something to assess.

Do I need scientific facts about pollution?

Not for most tasks. Observable effects such as clogged drains, litter at a beach or a cleaner river are enough. Avoid figures you cannot check, because a wrong number damages the paragraph.

Can I use the same examples as my classmates?

Common examples such as recycling bins become dull when every essay uses them. Choose a less common but realistic situation, such as a school canteen reducing plastic straws, and explain its effect.

How do I end an environment paragraph?

End with a kesan that shows who benefits and how, for example cleaner drains during the rainy season. Avoid closing with a command such as 'Mari kita jaga alam sekitar', because it repeats the topic.

If your environment paragraphs fall back on slogans, a one-to-one BM teacher can point to the exact sentence where the specific choice is missing and help you write it in your own words.
