Technology essays with concrete examples

Your technology essay says gadgets have pros and cons, but you cannot think of a real example.

Technology tasks invite vague sentences such as “Teknologi semakin canggih”. A concrete point names a tool, a user and an effect, so the marker can see exactly what you mean.

This lesson belongs to SPM Bahasa Melayu theme-based writing. The revision steps follow developing original points about education and skills.

What is the device-user-effect pattern?

Write each technology point so that it answers three short questions. Which tool? Who uses it? What changes?

If one answer is missing, the sentence is too vague. The pattern works for benefits, harms and balanced tasks because only the effect changes.

Worked example: same tool, two tasks

Start with a first draft for the task “Kesan positif teknologi dalam pendidikan”.

First draft. Teknologi sangat berguna dalam pendidikan. Murid boleh belajar dengan mudah. Oleh itu, teknologi amat penting.

Revised paragraph. Aplikasi pembelajaran dalam telefon pintar membolehkan murid mengulang kaji pada waktu yang sesuai. Contohnya, seorang murid Tingkatan Empat yang tinggal jauh dari bandar menonton video penerangan Sains sebelum tidur dan menyemak jawapan latihan dalam aplikasi itu. Kesannya, dia lebih bersedia apabila guru membincangkan topik tersebut di dalam kelas.

The reasons for each change: the isi names the tool and the benefit, the contoh gives a user and a setting, and the kesan links to the classroom, which is what the task asks about.

Now use the same tool for the task “Kesan negatif teknologi terhadap remaja”.

Aplikasi yang sama boleh menjadi gangguan jika murid membuka telefon untuk belajar tetapi beralih kepada permainan. Contohnya, seorang murid memulakan ulang kaji pada pukul sembilan malam tetapi bermain sehingga pukul sebelas. Kesannya, dia letih pada keesokan harinya.

Only the effect has changed, and the paragraph is still built from the same pattern.

How do I avoid repeating one example?

One example is enough for one point, but a karangan with three points needs three different situations. Vary the user, the tool and the setting.

Point Tool User and setting
Learning Aplikasi pembelajaran Murid di luar bandar, malam
Communication Panggilan video Keluarga terpisah jarak
Work Perisian akaun Peniaga kecil di pasar

Different settings also stop the essay from sounding like a list of the same idea with new names.

The mistake to avoid

The common mistake is to describe technology as a person: “Teknologi membantu murid” or “Teknologi merosakkan remaja”. Technology is a tool, so the sentence hides who chose to use it and how. Put the user in the subject position, for example “Murid yang menggunakan aplikasi itu dapat…”.

Check yourself

Revise this paragraph for the task “Teknologi memudahkan urusan harian masyarakat”.

Teknologi memudahkan hidup. Banyak perkara boleh dibuat dengan cepat. Jadi, teknologi sangat penting.

Answer

One possible revision: Perkhidmatan perbankan dalam talian membolehkan orang ramai membayar bil tanpa beratur. Contohnya, seorang ibu yang bekerja sepenuh masa membayar bil air dan elektrik melalui telefon pada waktu rehat. Kesannya, dia menjimatkan masa yang dapat digunakan untuk membantu anaknya membuat kerja rumah.

Device: perkhidmatan perbankan dalam talian. User: ibu yang bekerja. Effect: menjimatkan masa untuk keluarga.

Common questions

What counts as a concrete technology example?

A named kind of tool used by a specific kind of person in a setting, such as a student using a video call to join a class while ill. It should be something a reader can picture in one sentence.

Do I need up-to-date brand names?

No. Generic descriptions such as 'aplikasi pembelajaran' or 'telefon pintar' are safer and do not date quickly. Brand names add nothing to the language marks and may sound like advertising.

How do I write about disadvantages without sounding negative?

State the effect on a specific person, then suggest a balanced habit. For example, a pupil who scrolls late at night may be tired in class, and a fixed screen-free hour at home can help.

Should I use technical words?

Use simple, correct Malay terms such as 'aplikasi', 'perisian' and 'sambungan internet'. Explain any term that a general reader may not know, and avoid English words that have a standard Malay equivalent.

If your technology paragraphs stay abstract, a one-to-one BM teacher can ask for the missing device and user in each sentence until the example comes naturally.
