Applying a principle means linking a syllabus principle to the facts of a situation. The four steps are: read the facts, choose the principle, apply it, and state the curriculum result.
This lesson follows distinguishing conditions, elements and examples in the Fiqh learning support cluster.
The four steps
- Facts: underline the key facts in the scenario.
- Principle: choose the syllabus principle that matches the key fact.
- Apply: show how the principle connects to the fact.
- Result: state what the syllabus teaches for this case.
Write one sentence for each step. The answer stays short and sits inside the syllabus.
Worked example: a scenario on time
Scenario: Khairul has been revising for 90 minutes when the time for Isyak enters. He is unsure whether to finish revising first or perform his solat.
Question: Using the syllabus, explain what should be done.
Facts: the time of a prayer has entered, and he is engaged in a permitted activity.
Principle: the syllabus teaches that solat should be performed when its time enters and should not be delayed without a valid reason.
Apply: revising is a good activity, but it does not remove the duty, so he should pause and perform solat.
Result: Khairul should perform solat first, then resume revising.
Wrong and corrected answers
Wrong answer. “Khairul can do anything he likes because revising is also good. Everyone should decide for themselves.”
The wrong part is that it never uses the principle in the textbook. It also treats the matter as personal opinion, which is not how exam answers work.
Corrected answer. “The syllabus teaches that solat should be performed when its time enters. Khairul’s revising is a good activity but does not remove this duty. Therefore he should perform solat, then continue revising.”
The corrected answer uses a principle, links it to the facts, and states the curriculum result.
The mistake to avoid
The common slip is stating a ruling for a person instead of a curriculum position. Compare the phrasings.
| Risky | Safer |
|---|---|
| “Khairul is sinful.” | “The syllabus teaches that solat should not be delayed without a valid reason.” |
| “He must never revise at night.” | “Revising does not remove the duty of solat.” |
Use “the syllabus teaches” to keep the answer at curriculum level.
When the scenario goes beyond the syllabus
Some scenarios bring in details the textbook does not cover, such as unusual circumstances. Answer only what the syllabus supports, and state that the remaining detail should be referred to a qualified authority.
The next lesson, directing personal rulings to qualified authorities, explains how to word that.
Check yourself
Scenario: Sara is about to begin solat and realises she does not know the direction of the qiblah in a new room. Using the four steps, write a short answer.
Answer
Sample: Facts: Sara is unsure of the qiblah direction. Principle: the syllabus teaches that facing the qiblah is a condition of solat. Apply: she should find the direction before starting. Result: she should check the direction using a reliable method, such as asking someone or using a trusted compass, then begin.
Check that each step has a sentence and that the wording matches your textbook’s terms. The answer stays at curriculum level.
