Directing personal rulings to qualified authorities

A fiqh question feels personal, and you are unsure how to answer within the syllabus.

An exam answer states what the syllabus teaches. A personal ruling tells a particular person what to do in their own life. The second goes to a qualified authority.

This lesson closes the Fiqh learning support cluster. It connects with using reviewed sources without issuing personal religious rulings.

A test for the boundary

Ask three questions of any sentence.

  1. Does it state what the syllabus teaches?
  2. Does it depend on one person’s particular circumstances?
  3. Would a qualified teacher need to know more about the person before answering?

If the second or third answer is yes, the sentence is a personal ruling. Rewrite it or refer it onward.

Worked example: two questions, two routes

Question A (syllabus). State two conditions for solat.

This is a syllabus question. The answer is a recall from your textbook: for example, facing the qiblah and covering the aurat.

Question B (personal). “I was ill last week and missed some prayers. What should I do now?”

This depends on one person’s circumstances and needs a qualified reader to hear the details. A tuition page or an exam answer is the wrong place for it.

A suitable referral: “This depends on your circumstances, so please ask your Pendidikan Islam teacher or the religious authority in your state.” The wording is short, respectful and complete.

Wrong and corrected answers

Wrong answer (to a student who asks). “You just need to make it up by doing double next week.”

The wrong part is that it gives a specific ruling without knowing the facts. It could mislead the student and is outside what a tuition session covers.

Corrected answer. “Your textbook explains the general principles. For what applies to you, please ask a qualified teacher or your state religious authority, who can hear the details.”

The corrected answer stays useful by pointing to the textbook and to the right person.

The mistake to avoid

The common slip is thinking that referring a question means not knowing the subject. In fact, knowing where the syllabus ends is part of knowing it.

Looks confident Is accurate
“The answer is X for everyone.” “The syllabus teaches X. For your case, ask a qualified authority.”

Guidance for families

Some parents ask whether a tuition teacher can settle religious questions for the family. Our lessons cover syllabus content and exam technique only.

For questions about the family’s own practice, a qualified religious teacher or the state religious authority is the right route.

Check yourself

Label each as syllabus or personal, and say where the personal one should go: (a) “List the elements of solat.” (b) “Is my situation an exception to the usual rule?”

Answer

(a) is a syllabus question: answer from your textbook. (b) is personal: it depends on the circumstances, so refer it to a qualified religious teacher or your state religious authority.

What to study next

Try the fiqh practice set to apply the boundary. You can revisit applying curriculum principles to a stated scenario for the answer method.

Common questions

Who is a qualified authority?

A qualified religious teacher, a recognised scholar, or the religious authority in your state, such as the state religious department. Ask your school Pendidikan Islam teacher where to direct a personal question if you are unsure.

Will tuition answer my personal fiqh question?

No. Tuition support covers syllabus content and exam technique. Personal questions about your own practice are referred to qualified authorities, so you do not get advice that does not fit your situation.

Can I write 'ask a qualified authority' in an exam answer?

Only if the question invites it, such as asking what to do when a matter is beyond the syllabus. Otherwise answer what the syllabus teaches. Follow the question and your teacher's guidance.

Is this page telling me what is permitted or not?

No. It explains the boundary between curriculum answers and personal rulings. For rulings on your own situation, ask a qualified authority.

If you are unsure how far an answer should go, one-to-one Pendidikan Islam lessons let a teacher practise syllabus-level wording with you and keep personal questions with qualified authorities.
